Key Policy: Agricultural Subdivisions – Any proposed Agricultural Subdivision in North Kohala shall submit an agricultural use/production plan with their preliminary subdivision application that clearly demonstrates that the land will be primarily used for active agriculture, and that any proposed dwellings will be farm dwellings.

2008–2009: South and North Kohala Community Development Plans (CDPs) completed — both included strong agricultural goals. North Kohala’s CDP set a target to produce 50% of locally consumed food.
2013: Strategic Plan for Community Food Security developed to leverage the CDP goals.
2013–2023: Sustained advocacy, resource mobilization, and program development aligned with CDP priorities.
2022: Resurgence of the Kohala Agricultural Working Group (CDP Working Group style); community visioning sessions convened under the leadership of Uncle David.
March 2023: Community visioning event on the future of Kohala agriculture (county-supported).
July 2023: Follow-up event to validate priorities identified in March.
2023: Water Summit held in response to community concerns about water access.
Late 2023–2024: Regional focus groups on community food security (North Kohala and Waimea).
2024–Present: County-led development of the Five-Year Agri-Food System Plan.
