2008 STRATEGIES:
Strategy 1.9: Establish a View Plane Protection Program to identify and protect areas of significant beauty along the Kohala Mountain Road and Akoni-Pule Highway corridor
Strategy 4.2: Improve Parks (restrooms, gym & public boat ramp)
Strategy 4.6: Improve Existing Roadway Systems and Create Emergency Bypass Roads
PROGRESS SINCE 2008:
Organized and hosted several public meetings at which departments met with residents to address road maintenance and safety issues.
Worked with State and County on road maintenance, signage and safety.
Engage regularly with our County and State representatives on park and road issues.
Prepared Pratt Road as an emergency bypass should a section of Akoni Pule Hwy. become blocked: maintenance, landowner liability, declaration of emergency, driver diversion.
Supported Friends of the Park organization for each county park. Serve as a link between them and the Department of Parks and Recreation.
Organized monthly meetings between park representatives and County Park maintenance staff.
Meet regularly with Malama Mahukona and Parks and Recreation on replacing the condemned Mahukona Pavilion and restructuring the entire park to accommodate sea-level rise.
Participated in three erosion control projects at Upolu airport with Airports Division and Kohala High School students.
Worked with the planners of several new subdivisions to establish height and vegetation limits to preserve viewplains from the highway.

NEW ISSUES TO ADDRESS:
Planning for the coordinated uses of the 16-mile stretch of the leeward coast including three parks and many acres of protected land while addressing highway safety issues.
Participating in the changes of highway administration and improvements, including Pololu Valley Lookout, Old Coast Guard Road, emergency use of Pratt Road, and the transfer of former State roads to the County.
Encouraging erosion control projects on the many acres of coastal lands now available for conservation stewardship.
Encourage advanced scenic studies of Akoni Pule Highway and Kohala Mountain Road for the purpose of extablishing safer vehicle lookouts.
